Who is involved?

Stanford University

Stanford is one of the highest prestige colleges in the United States. They have a facility called the nanofabrication facility. Research is done there by students and professionals side by side.

Some current studies include:

  • Biomedical Imaging: This is something that is used for cancer, different therapies, neuroimaging, etc.

  • Chemical Engineering: "Researchers in our department study biological phenomena at the molecular level (rather than the cellular level) to further understand mechanisms of drug delivery and metabolism" (3).

Bill Gates

Bill Gates is the owner of the Microsoft Corperation. Him and his wife have been funding many different technologies through their foundations and have a partnership with the National Nanotechnology Initiative.

Some current studies funded by him include:

  • Sterilization Program: It will conduct the "use sharp blasts of ultrasound directed against a man's scrotum to render him infertile for six months. It might accurately be called a 'temporary castration' technology" (4).

  • HIV Antibiotic: "Electrically spun cloth with nanometer-sized fibers can dissolve to release drugs" (5).

International Business Machines Coorperation

This technology company is know for is role in nanotechnology. They have been one of the lead researchers in this field for many years.

Some current studies are:

  • Nanocrystals: IBM is making thin film with nanocrystals incorperated into it to figure out the properties of nanocrystals.

  • Organic Transistors: "IBM has been a leader in polymer and organic electronics research" (6). Like silicone, this could be put into smart cards, electronic papers, etc.
